sadly this use to be one of my go to places for sushi, until the day I saw a cockroach. So I lost my appetite :( one cockroach means so many more around :( So I asked the waitress and she casually told me, yeah we see them all the time...thats when I really almost threw up. I never came back it's been like 3 years but I'm finally feeling comfortable leaving this review. Irving's nearby also has cockroach infestation. I don't know why they think this is acceptable to serve food around roaches. Please city of Wilmette fix the cockroach issue in these two places :(

I was disappointed by my experience at Akai Hana Restaurant in Wilmette. When I arrived to pick up my order, the host was pleasant and courteous. I paid for my takeout order and even included an 18% tip. However, as soon as the payment was processed, his demeanor changed completely. The warm interaction disappeared, and his responses were reduced to short, dismissive "uh-huhs." Instead of a genuine "thank you," I was met with an expression that made it seem as though he was unhappy to be standing at the door on what was not a busy Friday evening. I understand that working in a restaurant can be demanding, but every customer deserves to be treated with the same level of courtesy from beginning to end of the interaction. Good service isn't just about being friendly until the bill is paidβ€”it's about making customers feel appreciated throughout the entire experience. I sincerely hope this individual is not the owner, because the attitude I experienced does not reflect the kind of hospitality that encourages customers to return.

Came on Friday at 1-ish. SeatedThe place is a little outdated but service was quick and very pleasant. I ordered the sushi deluxe lunch special. It was fresh and delicious. I love the reusable glass water bottle they have.

Many choices of meals combo, variety of sushi rolls and maki, price is reasonable, food is good value. Love to have their ice cream with the combo meals. Caterpillar sushi roll is exceptional.

Mediocre rolls; you can find identical quality ones anywhere, if not far better. They're also tiny. But so much more egregious was their tuna teriyaki lunch set. I don't know if it was low quality fish or just so crazy overcooked, but it looked and felt like pork. So overcooked that there was zero tuna flavor, if any flavor at all besides the teriyaki. So overcooked, that I'm still not 100% convinced that it actually was tuna. Pictures attached, but it was so overcooked that it became white, almost like chicken, flaking apart in a way that felt reminiscent of braised/stewed pork. Very audacious to look at what I was looking at and to tell me that it is their standard, normal tuna. Even if this is true, that just means they have terrible quality of cooking for their cooked fish. Service was also mediocre. Made a mistake on the order that I had to correct. Server was barely present and we had to track him down both when making our complaint about the tuna, and when asking for the check. Will not be going back in a market already saturated with better Japanese food options. $37~ (pre-tip) for one lunch box and one set of maki.
